It is with great sadness that we learned at the end of last week of the sudden passing of one of the Club’s all-time great players, Geoff Spencer, at the age of 75.

Geoff played for the Club from the mid-1960’s until the early 1980s and during that time was part of Dave Bradshaw’s and Roger Pauley’s Herts County Division 1 championship-winning teams. However, it was during the period when Tommy Everitt and Terry Craddock took over the management of the team in 1975 that Geoff made his mark by taking on the captaincy and leading the Club to success by winning the Herts County Premier League and South Midlands League Division 1 titles. He was also a key player in the club’s FA Vase run, which saw Royston get to the 4th Round for the first time before going out to Billericay in the 1978/79 season. Geoff won his final honours with the Club after winning the Herts. Charity Shield in 1982 under Dave Bullock before leaving Royston to play for and manage Great Chishill.

If there was one phrase that summed up Geoff’s approach to the game, it’s simply that ‘he took no prisoners’ in the tackle and inspired commitment to the cause amongst his teammates which will always be remembered by those who saw him in action.

On behalf of the Club, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to all his family and friends, especially Margaret and daughters Laura and Eleanor.

RIP Geoff.
